Interview from The Crypt: Tessa Wanton

Welcome, once again, my creatures of the night to another Interview from The Crypt. And today do I have a tasty treat for you for today's vic... I mean visitor is the amazingly talented and wonderful Tessa Wanton.

First of all I would just like to say welcome to The Crypt and thank you for stopping by today.

Why don’t you introduce yourself to my creatures of the night and tell us a little about yourself.

Tessa: Thanks for inviting me into *looks around* erm, this lovely... *coughs uneasily* damp Crypt. Well I am a new author, new to writing and certainly new to writing erotica. I’ve predominantly been a composer until now, dabbling now and then in performance, and it just seemed natural to extend my creativity into the written word!

When did you first begin to write? Was there a specific moment or did something happen to make you think ‘I could be a writer’?

Tessa: Earlier this year I was made redundant, and to keep my mind sharp when I was looking for work, I started to write and test out snippets on a fetish website. People seemed to like what I did, and the rest is history!

What are you currently working on? Would you mind giving the readers a quick synopsis in 100 words or less?

Tessa: I’ve just submitted one book for consideration called ‘Tickled Pink!’ which is essentially a passionate love story with a dark beginning, and a large helping of contemporary kink. When Ellie, my protagonist, is saved in the most unexpected of ways by her boss, she finds out he’s a lot more complicated than he appears on the surface. Will she be able to forgive him his appetites? Will she be able to reconcile the deep dark secret he’s been hiding for many years?

Where do you draw your inspiration for your stories, characters and settings?

Tessa: Inspiration for me comes from my life. I think if you want people to connect and resonate with your stories you have to draw in elements of reality – there’s nothing more exciting than the ‘is it true? Could it really happen?’ Again, with the characters, they are made up with elements of people close to me. Characters have to be human, flawed, imperfect, and of course the settings for me have to be real too. If something exists, it is so much easier to describe the minute details.

Is there one particular genre you prefer writing in and is there a genre you would never attempt and if so why?

Tessa: For the moment I prefer writing erotica. It seems there are many stories aching to get out and be written and explored. Who knows what will happen though, I just tend to have ideas for stories, I don’t decide that I will write specifically in a genre, and at the moment I just seem to be completely fascinated with human interactions and relationships involved with deep emotional contact. And with deep emotional contact, situations of an erotic nature tend to rise to the surface.

If you weren’t a writer/ couldn’t write anymore what would you do?

Tessa: I would definitely pursue my singing and composition. I still spend a lot of time composing and singing now, however if I didn’t have my writing, I would certainly push the performance side of my music, and perhaps develop my acting skills!

If you could become a member of the opposite sex for 24 hours what would be the first thing you would do?

Tessa: Definitely experience what it would be like to climax. Whenever I ask a man to describe the feeling of an orgasm, I never seem to get a satisfactory answer. So if I could feel that for myself, I would hope I could perhaps put some words to the sensation myself!

Which fantasy creature/being do you like the most?

Tessa: *giggles* I know this is going to sound lame, but I love all the Roman and Greek mythology, so the Machiavellian god creatures have to be a favourite of mine.

If you could be your favourite fantasy figure what would be the first thing you would do?

Tessa: Well, if I could be Venus/Aphrodite, the goddess of love, I would cast spells of love and passion over all of the world and just sit back and watch the orgies!

What scares you the most?

Tessa: Losing the ones I love.

Favourite film?

Tessa: GAH! Just ONE? I have so many... So many different genre, different purposes, different aims, I really simply can’t choose one!

Worst film you have ever seen?

Tessa: Black Swan. It was hyped so much, and it may have been artily filmed and critically acclaimed, but just because someone says something is good doesn’t necessarily mean it is. It was terrible. No plotline continuity, silly scenes just designed to shock, I spent the entire time laughing, there was simply no way I even had a chance to connect with any of the characters. I just didn’t care!

Favourite book?

Tessa: I love ‘An Equal Music’ by Vikram Seth – I love it. Such a beautiful book – and of course, you can’t beat ‘Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’ by Douglas Adams. A true classic and a book everyone should read!

When you go shopping what is the one thing that you always HAVE to buy?

Tessa: Chocolate. What is life without chocolate?

Going back to favourite film write an erotic scene featuring the main characters in 100 words or less.

Tessa: Well, as I couldn’t seem to nail down one particular film, I’ll pick Die Hard for this particular scene. Alan Rickman, Bruce Willis and Bonnie Bedelia. So Hans Gruber has Holly Gennaro hostage... Will John McClane save her in time?

“Now Holly” Hans sneered in his heavy accent, “don’t you look pretty this evening? I wonder, would John come running if you were perhaps in grave peril?” He walked slowly around her, taking in her heaving chest and watching her struggle feebly as she sat bound tightly to the chair. He savoured the idea of making her scream, but strangely for him, the need to have her in a carnal fashion was making him ache painfully as a plan finally solidified in his mind. Wrapping his hand around her throat, he looked deep into her terrified eyes, mere inches from her face. “Oh yes Holly, we will make John try to save you my dear, and I can assure you that I will enjoy the method of persuasion a great deal” and he kissed her deeply as he decided the perfect way to make her scream could indeed involve relieving the insistent throbbing that had now started to consume him.

And finally, just for a light hearted end to the interview.

What words would you want etched on your tombstone?

Tessa: Oh, definitely the great Spike Milligan ‘I told you I was ill’
