Time for the truth

 Time for the truth

The last six months had been the best months of my life. I had met the most amazing woman, my job had gone from strength to strength, and we had just put a deposit on our forever home. Now though we both had another big decision to make and, as the warm sun began setting in the background I held April close, our foreheads touching lightly, and we stared into each other’s eyes.

“Are you sure you are ready to do this?” she asked, with a hint of nervousness in her voice.

“This is the next step towards our perfect life.” I replied, kissing her lightly on her lips. “We have got everything we could ever want. A new home, great jobs and, most importantly, each other.”

“But what if it all goes wrong? What if we go wrong”

“The only reason it will go wrong is because of other people, baby,” I told her. “I want to be with you for the rest of my life, and I hope that is what you want.

More than anything but what about your friends? Your family?”

“My friends, and family, have two choices,” I whispered, pulling her as close to my body as I could. Either they are supportive of us, and our relationship, or they can get the fuck out of our lives.”

With a final, lingering kiss, we took each other’s hand made our way, away from the sea, to where our friends and family were all gathered, drinkingdancing, and listening to music.

“Here they are. The happy couple,” my best friend, Mark, called out as we got closer. “Get yourselves something to drink.”

“We will,” said. “But first we have got something we want to tell you. Just turn the music off for a minute

Let me guess,” Mark said, telling everyone to gather round. “You’ve only gone and got April pregnant, haven’t you?

As soon as she heard that word April gripped my hand tighter than ever, and I heard her take a deep breath. Turning to look in to her eyes I smiled, to reassure her everything was going to be okay, and kissed her.

“No, Mark, I haven’t got April pregnant.”

“Then you’ve gone and got married without telling us,” Sara, another friend shouted above the music.

No, we haven’t,” April said. “Not yet.”

“Then what is it, Sam?” another friend asked.

“There’s only one way to tell you this,” I told them. “And that is April, the woman I love, is transsexual.”

As soon as the word came out of my mouth everything went silent and, as April gripped my hand even tighter, I looked around at everybody. The silence seemed to last for an age, and I began wondering whether April had been right to be worried, when Sara was the one who finally broke the silence.

So, what if she is transsexual. If you are both happy then that is all that matters.” She said. “Fuck what anybody else thinks because I, for one, would like to wish you both all the happiness in the world.

“There’s just one thing I need to ask,” Mark said.

“Then ask,” April said, “I’ve heard it all before.”

“Actually, April, I was just going to ask Sam if I could be his best man?” He said, before throwing his arms around the pair of us. “Somebody get these two a drink, there’s partying to be done.”
