Tantalizing Tuesday Tease: Running (A Tale from beyond the grave)

Running (A Tale from beyond the grave)

I'd been running for what felt like hours yet, as I glanced over my shoulder, they were still following me. I'd gone further and deeper into the woods than ever before, occasionally veering off the path but the figure always seemed to be the exact same distance behind me.
Stumbling as I glanced back I rolled a couple of times before scrambling back to my feet, sure that the figure would be virtually on top of me, but they weren't, the gap between them and me stayed the same.
Spying a narrow, partially overgrown, path to my left I quickly veered along it and darted behind a fallen tree. Crouching down I tried to get my breath, before cautiously over the top of it. The figure was no longer there, they were gone, it was like they had vanished into thin air. Raising myself up a little more I double-checked, just to be sure but there was definitely no sign of them.
Slowly my breathing returned to normal and I felt a smile forming on my lips, a smile that became a full-blown hysterical laugh, a laugh that was suddenly cut short by the razor-edged blade slicing clean through my neck.
