If you go down to the woods today
The
first time I heard the story I was no more than five years old but
had always assumed that's all it was a story, a fairy story invented
by the parents of the town to keep us kids from wandering into the
dense woods and becoming lost. They tried to convince us they were
telling the truth, asking us if we'd seen Mr. This or Mr. That
lately, even tough they knew we wouldn't have though because,
although the reality was more likely to have been that they had left
town to find work in the city, our parents always told us they had
last been seen wandering into the woods, in a trance, as if
hypnotized by something just beyond the entrance.
Now
though I was twenty-five, a detective with the city police force and,
for the first time in years, had returned to where I spent my
childhood to
follow up reports that three men had gone missing, in exactly the
same way our parents used to tell us about, in the last two weeks and
now I knew that, for the first time, I would have to enter the woods
that filled my childhood with nightmares.

That's one heck of a tease. What is going on in those woods?!
Sends chills down my spine. It brings back memories of some woods I was scared to enter as a child
Very ominous. Definitely leaves me wanting to read more.
The mystery of the men vanishing in the woods and the story from his childhood leaves me asking what will happen to him when he goes there.
