Back from the dead

Opening my eyes everything was blurry. The room looked to be full of fog. People dressed in blue were surrounding me. Machines seemed to be beeping all around me. Blinking furiously, I tried to clear my vision, but it wasn’t working. Where the hell was I? Who were these people in blue? Fear crept through my body, and I tried to get up, only to be held down by two of the people in blue.

“Please don’t fight,” a voice, a female voice, said softly. “The doctor will be here in a minute.”

I wanted to ask what she meant by ‘the doctor’ but the words wouldn’t come out. My mouth was so dry, and I could feel something in my throat. I tried to grab whatever it was but, once again, one of the people in blue stopped me.

“Please, Julian, don’t struggle.”

Again, I tried to speak but couldn’t. Who were these people? What were they doing to me?

Then I heard a door open and tried to lift my head, to try and get a glimpse of who had entered the room.

“Julian, it is so good to see you awake,” a male voice, the doctor I presumed, spoke. “It’s a miracle, but a good one.

Then he was standing over me, looking down. He looked huge, well over six feet tall. Whatever he was going to do to me I had no chance of fighting back, I felt so weak. I felt his hands on my face, holding me still, while he opened my eyes, one after the other.

“Julian, what I am going to tell you will come as a shock,” the man said. “But I implore you to not start fighting against these nurses.

“W-W-What do you mean n-n-nurses,” I finally managed to stutter.

“Four days ago, you had a massive cardiac arrest.”

Now I knew something strange was going on. I hadn’t had a cardiac arrest I'd have known. Clearly whoever these people were up to something shady, and I was defenceless.

I tried to sit up, again, but was held down again.

“Julian, listen carefully,” the doctor began. “You really did have a cardiac arrest; you are currently in the intensive care unit in hospital and there was no way you should ever have woken up, not after the severity of the arrest.”

A nurse lifted my head slightly, while another held a plastic cup against my lips.

“Take a sip of this, Julian,” the nurse holding the cup whispered. “It’s only water, I promise.”

Water would be a relief. The dryness of my mouth, and whatever was blocking my throat, was making breathing difficult, but could I really trust her? Was she really a nurse? Was it really water? Could I risk it?

Taking as larger breath, as I possibly could, I let the nurse holding the cup pour a small amount of the liquid into my mouth and waited. I waited for what seemed like an eternity. As I waited my vision, thank to more furious blinking, slowly came back, and I could see a lot more clearly.

The people in the room did look like nurses, but they could just be dressed like that to make me believe whatever they said, but nothing, apart from my mouth starting to feel normal again, happened. My eyes didn’t close. I could still hear murmuring among the nurses in the room. I could see machines surrounding the bed I was in, and I could see wires inserted into various parts of my body.

“How are you feeling Julian?” The man dressed as a doctor asked.

“A-a-apart from confused I feel fine.”

My voice sounded almost normal.

“Confusion is to be expected.” the doctor told me. “But I am glad you are confused.”

“Confused shows that you are still here instead of dead, like you should be, the nurse who gave me the drink whispered, before leaning over me and placing a gentle kiss on my forehead. “Welcome back, Julian.”
